School year and holidays

The school year begins in early September and finishes in late July and is divided into six terms, each lasting about six weeks with a break between each term.

Private schools have longer holidays than state schools. If you have children in different schools, check the dates carefully as they do not necessarily match!

Holiday activities

Many local providers offer fee-paying ‘holiday camps’ on school grounds or at leisure centres, often on a theme or featuring a particular sport, music or drama activity. You can book for a half day, full day or a whole week. Our Childcare Services team have negotiated access to a variety of play schemes and summer camps, or see local out-of-school childcare options on the Oxfordshire County Council website. Other childcare options such as hiring a nanny, childminder or an au pair might also be possible over the summer holiday.

See the Family Activities page for ideas if you will have some time off to spend with your children.
